Pop singer and Billboard chart darling, Lisa Loeb, will play a kids show of camp songs and more, tomorrow in Glendale. I had the chance to IChat with her today and talk about kids shows, cats and donuts.
Los Angeles Pop Media Examiner: You've done all kinds of shows, stadium, group tours like Lilith, The Tonight Show-all the talk shows, really. With a show like this, do you try to convey something different?
Lisa Loeb: I try to teach kids how to make a peanut butter sandwich. I don't usually get into that on my grownup shows. Although we made pies on stage with a chef when I was promoting my Cake and Pie album.
LAPME: You are a proud cat owner. How would your cats fare at one of your shows?
LL: They would probably either try to sit on my hands while I'm playing or howl in the corner under a chair.
LAPME: I attended a kids event of yours a few years back and the whole audience, kids and adults, was with you every step of the way-one of those shows where from the audience's point of view, there is a real connection. Can you feel when that's happening from your vantage point on the stage?
LL: I totally can feel it. It's actually informed my grownup shows. I figured out that it doesn't have to be about performing the most deep and complicated songs, but instead it's all about connecting at the moment. That's what makes a live show special and different from listening to a record.
LAPME: At that same venue, a few weeks after your show that we just talked about, I went to see Mr. Winkle, who at that time was purported to be the smallest dog in the world. I know when boxers compete, they trash talk. Any words for Mr. Winkle?
LL: Hi. (said in a tiny voice.)
LAPME: Anything else you want to say about tomorrow's show?
LL: Please come! It'll be fun for the whole family. Also, sometimes people in the audience teach me their camp songs. Oh, and it's a short set, so your kids won't go crazy. And there are cute t-shirts with marshmallows, some with cupcakes with glasses, and a squirrel with a baseball.
LAPME: It's National Donut Day. Thoughts?
LL: I'm totally obsessed with donuts. I love K's Donut Emporium on Ventura Blvd. near Lankersheim in Los Angeles. I also love Stan's- everyone loves Stan's. I'm kind of a donut connoisseur, not to brag. Ooh, also the donut muffins at Big Sugar bakery in Studio City are excellent! Not a big fan of Krispy Kreme- I love their logo, but not the donuts, and I've tried them all!
