People like to go on about the 10 year Anniversary of a movie's release-usually big or cult movies -but I was watching cable the other night, and when 1989's She's All That starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook came on, I was psyched to be celebrating its 10 year anniversary. In pajama pants. On my couch.
There are 5 notable things about this film:
5) Sarah Michelle Gellar is in a lunch room scene for 4 seconds.
4) Paul Walker hadn't yet reached his fast and furiously hot potential.
3) It has, hands down, the best choreographed dance scene in a non-musical film ever.
2) Rachael Leigh Cook is too cute to be considered "ugly" at the beginning of the movie, thus failing the film's main premise that she needs a full makeover.
1) Albeit forced to, Freddie Prinze Jr. does performance art. With a hacky sack.
This got me thinking about another Top 5 list. After serious digging, and help from my friend Nathan, I've put together the Top 5 scenes in Movies or Television where performance art is, well, performed.
5) Legal Eagles: Darryl Hannah is both a performance artist AND a pyromaniac. And Robert Redford is forced to watch! From All The President's Men to watching Darryl Hannah setting things on fire in front of paintings of herself? If you dare click here.
4) Slaves of New York: This one is a gimme. To see a woman perform in a refrigerator turned bath tub, do so here.
3) Sex and the City TV Show: In the last season, Charlotte drags Carrie to a gallery where a performance artist has "placed herself on display without any food or water". This is when Baryshnikov's character, Aleksandr Petrovsky is introduced, and drags Carrie into one of the show's duller story lines. Still, he does drag her back to the gallery to see if the performance artist cheated and started stuffing her face. The cool thing is, the performance is based on the actual work of this chick.

2) The Big Lebowski: Maude? Maude's landlord? What Condition my Condition is In? Anyone? Ok, I know that Gutterballs is more music video/experimental film, but Maude is a performance artist, which is enough for me. Who knew Jeff Bridges could cut a rug? Enjoy here.
1) Joaquin Phoenix's Late Show with David Letterman appearance: Some of you think that he is "for real". But does that not make it performance art? Let the performance art historians be our final judges.
