The location is not quite SoHo, not quite Nolita, not quite Little Italy, and not quite the Bowery. It’s a mixture of all four, in one convenient Spring Street location. The ambiance is romantic, with small votive candles casting playful shadows on the diners. The plastic cube-enclosed chandeliers evoke a modern feel while looking down upon classic white wooden country furniture. The dining room is small, and the bar is even smaller, but the food is worth the wait for a table.
Try the almond stuffed dates as your first course – it is a perfect mélange of sweet and salty, with the crisp bacon and blue cheese complimenting the nuts perfectly. As for your entrée, the New Zealand baby lamb melts in your mouth, and is accompanied by chickpea hummus, black olives, and feta chimichurri. If you’re in a fish mood, the taquitos are delicious, and come with either crispy bass or chipotle shrimp.
Barmarché is also famous for brunch, and you must try the French toast, which is served with fresh strawberries. A tip, though: when ordering something sweet for breakfast at Barmarché, pair it with a savory side of bacon. The salt makes the dish irresistible!
