The Creek and the Cave has a free comedy show every Sunday night.

Comedy shows will make you laugh. This is a fact. There is a difference between a comedy show and a random person doing stand-up, with the former catering to the local crowds and the latter hooking in unsuspecting tourists and charging them $10 a drink with a four drink minimum. Beware any comedy showcase that is advertised on a flyer shoved in your face in Times Square. (What are you doing in Times Square in the first place, New Yorker?)

In any case, there are some awesome comedy shows in the city (and elsewhere) that feature seasoned comedians that may or may not have appeared on TV, movies, or this newfangled internet. Here are four you should see (one is tonight!):

The Creek and the Cave is located on Long Island City, but for those who want to trek out to see a free show, it's well worth it. Sunday nights are hosted by Derrick Comedy, which is the trio of Dominic Dierkes, DC Pierson, and 30 Rock writer Donald Glover. So get off your couch and make it out to LIC tonight.

Tearing the Veil of Maya: Michael Showalter and Eugene Mirman host this Park Slope-based comedy show every Sunday night (except tonight... it returns January 11). Not only is this team hilarious, but their friends are also laugh-out-loud funny, and stop by on a regular basis. Those who have shown up in the past include Aziz Ansari (Human Giant), David Cross (Arrested Development), John Oliver (The Daily Show), Janeane Garofolo (too much funny stuff to mention), and Zach Galifinakis (that Kanye West video, among other things). The show is Sundays at 7:30 at Union Hall in Park Slope, Brooklyn and costs $7. That's the cost of a beer in the city!

The Slipper Room in the Lower East Side usually plays host to scantily clad ladies in burlesque acts, but Tuesdays at 8:30 are dedicated to comedy by those who are wearing clothes. Seth Herzog from Best Week Ever hosts, and his mom even comes every week! His funny friends like Aziz Ansari (Human Giant) like to stop by, and sometimes the jokes make his mom blush. It starts at 8:30 and is $5 every Tuesday at The Slipper Room.
