Getting reservations for a hip restaurant can be tough and involve massive amounts of planning ahead. Once you have the coveted time slot, it can still be tricky if people are added or subtracted from your party last minute, causing some to lose their reservation altogether. Never fear – the internet is here!
OpenTable.com is a website devoted to helping you get the best seat for dinner, lunch, or brunch in the city. First, a profile must be created in order to use the site. Next, input the date, time, and amount of people in your party. You can specify the name of the restaurant you are looking for, or search by neighborhood or cuisine. To snag a reservation, simply click on an available time. A prompt pops up on the right that asks if you want to send a free invitation from opentable.com to the other members in your party, but this is optional. You will receive an email confirmation, and all you have to do is show up.
The best part? Points are accumulated in your account online, and once you reach 2000, you can redeem them for a $20 OpenTable dining check, which is good at any restaurant on their site. 5000 gets you $50, and 10,000 is worth $100. Most reservations earn a paltry 100 points, but look for specials called “Dining Rewards” that give you 1,000 points a pop. Sometimes they involve dining at new restaurants, other times it’s taking an early or later time slot.
If you need help deciding where to eat, the site has “top lists” that tell you which restaurants were rated most romantic, or which are good for big groups. The search function is impressive, and it helps you have a more open mind when it comes to choosing a restaurant.
(Traveling out of town? OpenTable.com goes beyond NYC, reaching across the United States, even to the culinary gems of Hawaii.)
