 En garde! Michelle Obama wears fall's must-haves -- cardigan, wide and flats (AP)

While her husband, President Barack Obama, continues to fight the forces of evil, Michelle Obama is laying out a wardobe action plan for us mere mortals. No First Lady has done so much to free us from the twin tyrannies of pantyhose and high-heeled shoes.

If you want inspiration for fall, look no further than the White House where a skirt, flats, wide belt and cardigan make for a polished, professional and down-to-earth style that is right at home on the lawn and behind the podium.

The key to Michelle Obama's look is mixing and matching. She loves color as she demonstrates here with her lime green shirt, printed skirt, dark green flats and a turquoise(!) sweater. While we expect her choice of colors to darken up as the days grow shorter and the fabrics to become a bit heftier (trading cottons for wools), we thinks she's pretty much cracked the Fall '09 code.
