How much would you pay for a flying barstool? Ryanair hopes to find out.
Ryanair, the low cost Irish airline, has recently made news for the proposed fat tax and bathroom usage fees, but they may have topped even those with their most recent cost saving idea. How would you like to spend your flight belted to a barstool or even a rail on the wall of the cabin? That’s right, Ryanair wants to sell standing room tickets on future flights in order to maximize space usage on planes and increase revenue per flight. Of course, passengers would pay less for these subpar seats, but at what cost?
You would think this is the hair brained idea of Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s chief executive, who brought us the drop slot for checked bags and obesity fees, but this is not a new idea. The Chinese discount airline, Spring, has been working with the government to get approval for a similar idea. With the support of Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, Spring will likely see passage within the next year. Ryanair is currently in talks with the Irish Aviation Authority about possible regulation changes and have even conferred with Boeing about designs for a new plane that incorporates standing room. O’Leary promises “the passenger will be fully supported and of course we will fully comply with any safety regulations.” If the airline gets approval passengers could be standing on flights of less than two hours within the next two years according to a Ryanair spokesman. Don’t plan on seeing these types of seats in any American carriers any time soon. According to the U.S. FAA every passenger over the age of two must have a seat and as for myself I hope it stays that way. Standing for a flight might save me a few bucks, but what will it cost me and other passengers in personal safety?
