This is a first in a series of articles highlighting the art of trials riding. Each lesson will be instructed by Max Nelson who will define then demonstrate how to master each skill. Max is an extremely accomplished trials rider who finished second overall in the national expert class this year.
For this segment Max will explain and perform a "roll up" maneuver, a common form of traversing a sizable object.

Here he slowly approaches the obstacle at a steady speed. His knees are bent and his eyes are focused near the top of the obstacle.

His knees bend slowly as he starts to bring the front wheel up and will try to gently tap the front wheel at the top. Once his front tire has made solid contact he lifts up with his knees and body to elevate the back wheel to the top of the obstacle.

Here Max keeps his weight back to keep the traction on the rear wheel and "holds pressure" (a term that will be discussed in another lesson) to keep his front tire in the air. His knees are bent and arms straight, clearing the object with control.
