I love summer because the produce is really fresh and abundant. Making salads and grilling using fresh produce, eating watermelon and other fresh fruits is what makes summer light and fun.
Another great thing about summer is being able to visit the local farmer's markets. It is a great way to support your local farmer's while enjoying home grown produce. In addition to fresh produce, you can also find homemade foods, specialties, canned foods, flowers, and other items. The larger markets often have live folk music to enhance your shopping experience.
With summer coming to a close and fall just around the corner, you can still benefit from the produce found at your local farmer's markets. You can make speghetti sauce and freeze it and use it for your favorite fall or winter dishes. Flash freeze fruits and vegetables for year round enjoyment. For example, take some raspberries and spread them on a rimmed cookie sheet and pop it in the freezer overnight. The next day transfer them to a freezer bag and place them in the freezer. You can do this with peppers, corn, strawberries, and so on. Now you can avoid the costs of items not in season and enjoy them year round.
Provided below is a list of a few of the local markets in Minnesota. You still have time to get out there and support your local farmer's.
