It's Monday morning and I can't find my energy.
This is a common occurrence among many people, and it doesn't just happen on Monday's. So, what can we do? Where do we look for energy? Did you eat breakfast this morning? That might be a good start. It is said that eating breakfast is the most important thing you can do to help you stay healthy and get your day started. It is never a good idea to skip a meal, least of all breakfast. If you lower your calorie intake by skipping foods, your body will think it is in 'starvation mode' and start storing food in the form of fat which will lower your metabolism.
In order to increase your metabolism, you must first know what it is. It is defined as the rate at which our bodies burn calories while at rest. People who have more muscle burn more calories therefore have a higher metabolism. For someone who is overweight, it is often difficult to work out in order to increase their metabolism. So, why not start with what you put in your body. Once you start eating better, your body will start feeling better and you will find that you will have a bit more energy to start working out.
Here are a few tips and tricks to get you started.
1. Choose healthy foods that give you a boost. Water, water, water. Grapefruits are known to reduce insulin levels and are high in vitamin C. Broccoli, high in calcium and vitamin C and A, folate and fiber. Apples, pears, lean turkey, oatmeal, hot peppers. Did I mention water?
2. Eat breakfast. As stated earlier, do not skip a meal. Experts say you should eat a small meal every 4 hours to maintain a steady metabolism. If it sounds like that might be too difficult to manage, try making meals in advance. Prepare a weekly menu and prep your meals the night before. Being prepared makes it manageable.
3. For those of you who think that exercise isn't an option, think again. Those diets that promise results without exercise are telling you lies. You must work out in order to stay healthy. Even if you have to start at 15 minutes a day. Do it. That is 15 minutes more than the day before. If you keep it up, you will find that you will be able to increase that time in no time. For those of you who have major joint pain, try power walking laps in the pool. You will find it to be quite easy and stress free on your joints. You will feel great afterwards.
4. Sleep. It is recommended that you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. This is vital for cell and tissue repair as well as helping to build muscle mass. For or more information on sleep, visit MedicineNet
5. If you like alternate methods, try chinese herbs like ginseng or schizandra often used for fatigue. (Remember to check with your practitioner before starting any herbs or supplements.) Energy work, such as yoga, tai chi, qigong, Reiki can add to and balance out your energy as well as open up energy channels.
Remember, getting healthy is a lifestyle change not a quick fix. Be consistent and you will be surprised at how quickly you will see results.
