Michael Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, will not attend the King of Pop's memorial service at Staples Center on Tuesday, July 7 - citing his presence will be too much for grieving fans and Jackson's family members. (Smart doctor.)
Dr. Murray was by the "Thriller" singer's side when he died on Thursday, June 25 at his Holmby Hills home. The doctor performed CPR on the singer while awaiting the arrival of paramedics.
While Murray said he'll be "mourning in private", his spokeswoman, Miranda Sevcik, told People.com, "He is in seclusion, not speaking even with family and friends, and won't attend the singer's memorial next week."
Sevcik adds, "He feels his presence would remind people of Michael Jackson's death, and the doctor would prefer that people remember his friend as he was in life."
At this time, Murray has declined to comment publicly on his care of the "Billie Jean" singer, pending the outcome of toxicology tests.
In related news, California State Attorney General is also probing into the Murray's distribution of drugs to Michael Jackson, along with LAPD.
According to TMZ.com:
"California State Attorney General Jerry Brown has launched an investigation into the prescribing practices of Michael Jackson’s doctors.
Brown says his office will help the LAPD track the controlled substances that made their way to Jackson. The State’s Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement will be combing files. It’s the same method Brown used to track prescriptions in the Anna Nicole Smith case........
Jackson used various aliases to score drugs, including Omar Arnold and Jack London. We’ve learned at least one high-end pharmacy in the area where Jackson lived did its own search and has turned up the name Omar Arnold in its database."
To add to the investigation, powerful sedatives were reportedly found in Jackson's home. According to FoxNews.com:
"The powerful sedative Propofol — also known as Diprivan — was among several narcotics found in Michael Jackson’s rented suburban Los Angeles mansion, according to a law enforcement source. Some of the prescriptions also were dispensed under various patients names and doctors, leading investigators to believe aliases were used to obtain the drugs. Authorities are investigating allegations that the 50-year-old Jackson had been consuming painkillers, sedatives and antidepressants. The federal Drug Enforcement Administration and California Attorney General Jerry Brown both are helping Los Angeles police investigate the possible involvement of prescription drugs in Jackson’s death."
