What in the name of Michael Jackson is going on with Sammy Sosa's face?

When former Chicago Cubs player Sammy Sosa appeared at the 2009 Latin Grammy Awards last week in Las Vegas, he noticeably looked different. The hazel contacts aside-- Sosa's skin appeared several shades lighter, which left many questioning if he had vitiligo; the same disease the late Michael Jackson reportedly had.

However, on Monday (November 9), former Cubs employee and close friends of Sosa told the Chicago Tribune, Sammy is undergoing skin rejuvenation which is causing his skin to photograph lighter.

“He’s not trying to be Michael Jackson,” said Rebecca Polihronis, former Cubs Care/Community Relations manager. “He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin.”

Polihronis added, “Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting. He said, ‘If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture.’"

Sosa told Polihronis, “People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can’t believe it is such a big deal.” (Yeah, right.) 

Apparently, possible side effects of some laser skin rejuvenation treatments includes possible discoloration of the skin, causing skin to appear either lighter or darker.

Although Polihronis admitted "it did come out looking weird", Sosa wanted to treat his skin after years of playing baseball in the sun.

She explained, “He has always been concerned with the way he looks. Probably just bad timing going to an awards show.” (Ya, think?!)

Personally, I'm not buying it. If you test a small area of your skin and notice a drastic change in pigmentation, wouldn't you discontinue the treatment?

Just tell the truth Sammy. Somewhere Sosa's singing, "Like Mike, if I could be like Mike!"
