Before the final champagne bubble even burst inside the New York Yankees clubhouse, the winds of change began to blow toward the 2010 season.
In today’s baseball no team is immune to the free agent frenzy as 79 players filed on Thursday, the first day for players without binding contracts to announce their intention to test the waters. For the Kansas City Royals, alterations in personnel may be just what the doctor ordered.
Right-handed bullpen specialist Jamey Wright became the first Royal to drop his name in the ever-growing hat of eligible players. The 34-year-old finished 2009 3-5 with a 4.33 ERA while leading the team in appearances.
The bullpen will be just one area of focus this winter as GM Dayton Moore attempts to reinvent a club that tied for last place in the American League Central. Journeyman left-hander Bruce Chen also figures to be looking for a new place of employment next season.
New faces will be aplenty in the bullpen for Kansas City in 2010 including the addition of Steve Foster. Foster will serve as the Royals Bullpen Coach next season replacing John Mizerock, whose contract was not renewed. A former major league pitcher, Foster spent the past three seasons in the same capacity with the Florida Marlins.
In a related note, former Royals' lefty reliever Ron Mahay, who finished 2009 with the Twins, also filed for free agency making his services available.
