The King of Pop has passed.

The world is mourning the death of Michael Jackson, a transformative entertainer whose music defined the dance pop genre.

Jackson suffered apparent cardiac arrest at his home in California as he rehearsed for an upcoming comeback tour to launch next month in London at the O2 Arena.

News spread quickly and it seemed that within moments of his arrival at UCLA Medical Center fans began to gather in the streets outside.

Makeshift memorials have sprung up throughout the country in spots important to the Jackson family, including their Gary, Indiana home, their Encino, California home, and his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, outside of Grauman's Chinese Theater (see picture).  The Apollo Music Theater in Harlem paid tribute to the legend on their marquee following the announcement of his death.

Jackson got his first number one hit at the tender age of 11 with his brothers as the Jackson Five.  From that point forward, Jackson soared into super stardom, culminating in the album "Thriller."  That album spun off a string of number one hits and unforgettable, cinematic music videos.

"Thriller" was Michael Jackson's peak commercial success.  In recent years his career and legacy were marred by his changing physical appearance and legal proceedings following child molestation allegations.  Although Jackson was acquitted of the charges they seemed to always haunt him.

Celebrities are speaking out as fans of the international hit maker.  Tributes continue to pour in and some have likened Jackson's death to the experiences of the sudden loss of fellow icons Elvis Presley and John Lennon.

Jackson is survived by his three young children.
