Happy New Year! Let's reflect back on the year we just completed.
Sure, it's been a tough one economically, but it wasn't all bad. We warned you earlier this week that we liked lists. Here are some of the best that we have found:
The positively most useful of all of the top ten lists that we found is the Top 10 Obscure Google Search Tricks. Googling is a life skill that should be in everyone's arsenal and this list makes you more equipped for the hunt. See the hints here.
FuseTV did the bracket thing to noodle through the best music videos of '08. No surprise to us, our girl Brit landed on top with "Womanizer." It's just another step in the greatest comeback of 2008: Britney Spears. Check out the 32 that made their list here.
If you're looking for a Best Music of 2008 list, they are not hard to find. It all just depends on what exactly you are seeking. Detroit's Free Press website does a good job of recapping all of them here.
We think it's always fun to see how everyone else lives. You can do that when you check into the Amazon.com year end lists. They have everything from their best sellers to the most loved products. It's great insight into keeping up with the Joneses and a good barometer of whether your taste is really as good as you think it is. See their lists here.
Time Magazine's Best Inventions of the Year list is fascinating. For example, did you know someone has actually created an invisibility cloak? That will make Muggle Quidditch soooo much easier! Someone needs to let all those college kids know.
Seriously, though, you can find out some fascinating things that humans accomplished in 08... from fancy new cars to one of our favorites... the Hulu website. Check out the list here.
Time Magazine also gives us a list of the 50 Best Websites of 2008. If you've got some time on your hands, we recommend you surf each and every one that applies to you (Rate My Professor only works if you are taking college classes -- after all), even though we are not mentioned once (we are certain that Examiner just missed the list at 51).
Some are fluffy, some are functional and some are just fun, but that's alright because it is the internet. For example: Howcast is a YouTube-like site with funny how-to videos. We were also excited to discover Lookybook on the list. It will let us check out kids' books on the web before we buy them or get them from the library! Who knew?!? See the list here.
Now, if you are seeking the seriously silly and unimportant lists of '08 we recommend the Best Celebrity Scandals list over at celebtv.com. It didn't get much better than the stuff coming out of Hollywood to provide distractions from our rough economic times and two wars. Get more distraction here.
If you don't like lists at all, we're surprised you lasted this long into our column. But, we want to warn you. Do not turn on cable news or broadcast news or local news or any news. That is all it is going to be today: lists, lists, lists.
Just watch football. It's number one on our list of the best way to spend a New Year's Day, anyways.
