It was bound to happen at some point... and now Prop 8 - the controversial California ballot initiative - has been set to music.
A star-studded cast is catapulting Funny or Die's "Prop 8: The Musical" to viral video hit-dom. Along the way, its message is spreading far and wide.
Funny or Die is a comedy YouTube of sorts. It was created by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell (the one from Saturday Night Live). At first, I wasn't a fan of their now infamous clip of a potty-mouthed toddler landlord. But, since then FOD has supplied consistently funny stuff. I have officially added the site to my favorites (see the list at the right) and consider it a go-to for laugh out loud moments.
Proposition 8, for those of you unaware, is a controversial measure that defines marriage between a man and a woman. Since its unexpected passage in November, many politicians and celebrities have spoken out against it.
Marc Shaiman is a Hollywood type but not as well known as Ellen Degeneres and Joe Biden. The award-winning songwriter is the man behind some of those raunchy but memorable songs from the South Park movie and also legitimate musical theater like Hairspray. When he found out that a community theater director donated in support of Prop 8, he emailed his frustrations to friends. One of those emails went to McKay, who suggested he make a video for Funny or Die.
Along the way, Shaiman and McKay recruited big-name celebrities for the small-scale musical. Jack Black plays Jesus, for example and you can also see Oscar-nominated John C. Reilly featured prominently.
The clip is well-written and thought-provoking but most of all funny. Check it out below. See how many celebrities you can identify while you're watching...
Among the major stars in the video: Jack Black, John C. Reilly, Allison Janney, Rashida Jones, Andy Richter, Maya Rudolph, Neil Patrick Harris, Margaret Cho and Jennifer Lewis.
