The murmurs and whispers have started. And as we all know in this town, the murmurs and whispers are usually followed by an announcement.
Rumors are swirling that David Gregory will be named as the new host for venerable DC-based political talker "Meet The Press." The Huffington Post says it's a done deal for the extremely tall journalist.
NBC has told Politico that they have nothing to announce and made it even clearer when they told the New York Times they would not be announcing anything today.
To further complicate the report, Gregory's agent told the New York Observer he could not confirm or deny the rumor.
Oy. Who knows if Gregory is official. If he is named host, it will come as a blow to the group of Washington women lobbying for a female and/or minority anchor to replace Tim Russert.
Since Russert's death, former NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw has been ably filling in as host for "Meet the Press." During his tenure, MTP has had good "gets" -- most notably Colin Powell announced his crossing party lines to support Barack Obama in October on the show. This week is expected to be Brokaw's last and he's got another good guest (and someone Fox News can't get): President-elect Barack Obama.
Gregory is currently the host of MSNBC's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Recently, he has been the substitute co-anchor for Weekend Today on NBC.
If Gregory is named as host, let's all hope the set remains as is, as a sit-down one. Otherwise, the 6'5" Gregory will tower over anyone who comes in for a chat...
