MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews is seemingly exploring a run for the U.S. Senate in 2010. Although he is currently based here in Washington, D.C. reports are that Matthews is considering running for Arlen Specter's seat in Pennsylvania.
Matthews started out his Washington, D.C. career path as a staffer for former House Speaker Tip O'Neill. He is currently the host of "Hardball with Chris Matthews" on MSNBC and the Sunday talker "The Chris Matthews Show" on NBC. He is also a frequent commentator on both NBC and MSNBC.
Chris Matthews is a Philadelphia native and his brother is a local politician in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Kathleen Matthews, Chris' wife, is a previous local news anchor at WJLA (channel 7). She has been working in the private sector for a couple of years now.
FiveThirtyEight.com is reporting that Matthews has enlisted several Obama staffers for his potential campaign. They also say that Matthews has an uphill battle ahead of him because the incumbent, Specter, has a higher name recognition in the region. Read FiveThirtyEight.com's story here.
Matthews is expected to run as a Democrat for the seat. In 2010, Specter -- a high-ranking Republican -- will be 80 years old if he chooses to run again. Matthews is 62 years old.
Matthews has not officially announced anything about a possible run. He told the Huffington Post earlier today that "It is absolutely not true." Read their coverage of the story here.
There has been no word about how the exploration will affect Matthews' jobs with NBC and MSNBC. Logic would dictate that upon an official announcement, Matthews would have to go off-air. In recent memory, California First Lady Maria Shriver leaps to mind. Upon Arnold Schwarzenegger's official announcement of his candidacy for governor (on The Tonight Show no less), Maria was no longer visible at her NBC Today Show and Dateline posts.
