To run or not to run?  That is the question...

We don't know about you, but we feel like we are still recovering from Election '08.  But, don't worry.  That hasn't stopped the buzz.

In the midst of the November election, we told you how influential politics is on our pop culture and vice versa.

Recently we also told you how MSNBC talking head Chris Matthews is supposedly exploring a potential Senate run in 2010 for Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania's seat.  We've got more skinny on that rumor and even more news about 2010.

Matthews, it seems, recently signed on to extend his time with MSNBC.  At first, the solidification of Matthews' position at MSNBC implies that he's abandoned any hopes of running for that Senate seat.

It also implies that the exploration into running for Senate could have been a contract negotiation for Matthews.  Pardon the pun, but he was playing hardball with the network brass.

But implications aren't always right.  Given the rumors, we suspect that contract is not as ironclad as it would seem.

Our theory got more weight this week when fellow MSNBCer (and Newsweek journo) Howard Fineman told Carol Joynt "If he decides to run, he has my support."  Fineman also told Joynt that Matthews is "agonizing" about a potential run and will make a decision over the holidays.  We'll let you know when we hear.

By the way, MSNBC is making a little splash in the news circles lately with its own declaration...  saying they had their best year ever in 2008.  The declaration -- which came via press release -- is stirring the pot because by most accounts, MSNBC's year has been inconsistent.  Also, they usually run either second or third in the ratings behind Fox News Channel or FNC and CNN.  Still, we'll concede... it has been a banner year for them with the addition of Rachel Maddow to their lineup and icing in popular talker Keith Olbermann.

But, don't worry, America.  Matthews is not the only pop culture type to be floating 2010 rumors.

Country singer Tim McGraw is being talked about as a candidate for governor of Tennessee in 2010.  That's right.  Faith Hill is running for First Lady of Tennessee or so says New Republic magazine.

OK, so it's just rumors.  But, here's the facts:

Blog scuttlebutt is that McGraw has been exploring politics for years.  In 2006, he even told Esquire magazine that he liked the idea of Governor McGraw.

McGraw is a Democrat and Tennessee Democrats are hurting.  Rumors are that the Dems are courting McGraw to run against Bill Frist in 2010.

This week, McGraw came out and emphatically denied the politicking talk (through his spokesperson).  Still, the comments made to People magazine don't sound like they are etched in stone.  The rep said "It's something he is interested in, but not for 2010. Later in life."

Now, we all know that a denial is always absolutely, 100% final right?  Don't forget in November 2004, newly-elected Illinois Senator Barack Obama said he wouldn't run for president in 2008.
