And you thought HBO stood for Home Box Office. Silly you. Apparently it stands for Home Box Oprah!
The queen of... well... everything announced today she's joining forces with the cable network to develop programs. In recent years, Harpo Films has been the force behind made-for-television movies like "Mitch Albom's For One More Day". They have typically aired on ABC, but reports are that the deal between Harpo and ABC has expired.
Oprah will be developing with HBO programming of all shapes and sizes. During the announcement, scripted series, movies and documentaries were all mentioned in the inclusive, multi-year deal.
Winfrey is also poised to launch the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) cable channel in conjunction with local business Discovery Networks. During the announcement today, Oprah explained that she'll be working with HBO on scripted projects while OWN will focus on unscripted programming (akin to this summer's "Big Give").
In other Oprah news, she's admitting recent defeat in her ongoing war with weight. Winfrey says she is "off the wagon" in an essay in the latest issue of O Magazine. The brutally honest article also fesses that she is over the 200-pound weight mark.
As a result, expect more weighty issues on her talk show. It's already announced that her yoyo dieting will the topic of her January 5th show, the first day of a week of shows already being promoted as having a "Best Life" theme.
Last but not least, Oprah's coming! Oprah's coming! Hey everybody: Oprah's coming to Washington, D.C.
As expected, Oprah will be attending the inaugural events as a very vocal VIP in late January. The Washington Post first reported it, and "Access Hollywood" confirmed that the talk show host will also be broadcasting episodes from here as well. The shows will be beamed from the Kennedy Center and Winfrey's reportedly producing three shows in our fine city.
D.C. Tourism Examiner Ben Shlesinger is on top of all things inaugural, including Oprah's anticipated activities. Check out his coverage here.
