In this town, there are two vacancies we have been anxious to fill.
Last week we found out that Barack Obama would fill one of them.
Now, we are all on pins and needles awaiting the appointment of the next host of Sunday morning institution "Meet the Press".
The void left behind with Tim Russert's death this summer was most accutely felt during the election night coverage on NBC. Although Tom Brokaw tried, he failed to make us forget the plain spoken man from Buffalo that brought politics to the people.
Brokaw has tried to fill Russert's shoes as the temporary host of 'Meet' as well. He has done a commendable job.
Even in Russert's absence, the show continues to draw big names and make big news. Before the election, Brokaw and crew pulled in Colin Powell who endorsed Barack Obama on the show. But, as residents of Washington, DC we are ready for a permanent replacement.
Personally, I'm behind the women demanding diversity from NBC. I would love to see the next host NOT be a white man. You can check out their cause here. On the site several suggestions are thrown out there for the post, including PBS' Gwen Ifill, NBC's Andrea Mitchell and CNN's Campbell Brown.
There's even a Facebook movement afoot to draft Ifill to host.
Lately, the scuttlebutt has CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric in the conversation. Page Six recently spotted her out to dinner with NBC honcho Jeff Zuckerman. Not really a surprise, since the two are chummy from her days when she anchored the Today Show. Still, it's fun to wonder.
Let's get another tireless journalist named to the post... preferably someone who reflects the diversity of the show's viewership. So, NBC what are you waiting for? We're ready!
