Well, he finally did it.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain went back on Letterman and with his proverbial "hat in hand" begged the forgiveness of the Late Show host.
As we told you earlier this week, McCain's return was highly anticipated. Three weeks earlier, McCain skipped out on a scheduled appearance on the comedian's show in favor of the more serious Katie Couric's CBS "Evening News". McCain told Letterman that he was heading back to DC to work on the financial crisis, but instead stayed to do Ms. Couric's show and attend an event in New York City the next morning.
Letterman was not happy and he made headlines after delivering several jokes at McCain's expense and having Keith Olbermann -- a McCain critic -- on in his place.
McCain repeatedly told Letterman he had "screwed up." Letterman -- for his part -- seemed content to move past it saying "I'm willing to put this behind us."
McCain was grilled by Letterman (who seemed more newsman than comedian throughout the interview). He asked several times about McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate and inquired about the negative tone his campaign had taken.
But, McCain got his best line in of the night when he addressed Joe the Plumber (who received notoriety after being brought up several times by McCain during his final debate with Obama). He said "Joe, if you're watching, I'm sorry."
By the way, McCain's trip to the Ed Sullivan Theater wasn't easy but he did everything in his power to get there. When his scheduled flight from Philadelphia to New York City was postponed, McCain hopped on a helicopter.
