The Detroit Shock bolstered their backcourt depth Friday by signing free agent guard Anna DeForge.
The 5-foot-10 DeForge is a seven-year WNBA vet who began her career with the Shock in 2000. She then played three seasons in Phoenix, two in Indiana and spent last year with the Minnesota Lynx. DeForge started all 34 games for the Lynx, averaging 8.5 points, 3 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 24.9 minutes per game.
DeForge, 33, replaces center/forward Barb Farris, who was waived.
The Shock signed DeForge to complement Katie Smith as a second long-range shooting option. DeForge is a career 37.5 percent shooter from beyond the arc.
Detroit is shooting 29.6 percent from three-point range this season, 11th in the WNBA. Smith is a solid 20-for-52 (38.5 percent), but the rest of the team has only hit 14-of-63 triple tries combined (22.2 percent). Detroit’s opponents are 57-for-159 (35.8 percent) from three-point range. The Shock lost to New York on July 2 largely because the Liberty hit 12 of their 25 three-point attempts (48 percent), while the Shock went 2-for-12 (16.7 percent).
DeForge is also a reliable ballhandler who rarely makes an unforced error. Her best season was 2004 when she averaged 14.4 points per contest for Phoenix. Her career averages are 10.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 230 games, including 206 starts.
