Sundays are a good time to look back at the week that was...and be reminded that maybe our week wasn't so bad.....
Pope arrives to 21-gun salute
So the Pilgrim of Peace touched down in Amman Jordan and not only got a 21-gun salute, but he had to watch a military review. Hello? What kind of message is that? Don't even THINK of trying to bring peace to the region? We like khaki? We are top loaded with testosterone and you aren't going to make a bit of difference? And, while I'm at it, what's with the pope's wardrobe? Talk about confusing. He's wearing a white dishdasha like an Arab AND a white yarmulke like a Jew. I'd call him Pander pontiff, but this is Benny we're talking about. Let's not forget that his previous gig under JP2 was the enforcer of Catholic doctrine. And I don't want to say he was ruthless, but he makes Tony Soprano look like an altar boy. Weakness is not his style, so as far as the Muslim world is concerned, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for another apology.
Meanwhile in South Africa
Jacob Zuma was sworn in as President of South Africa. And what a long strange trip it's been. He comes from a poor background, joins the ANC as a young man, gets busted and pulls a double nickel on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela. So, good pedigree. More recently, the infighting inside the ANC leading up to these elections was the electoral version of a UFC cage match. First he is brought up on charges of corruption, then, there was that whole rape thing, for which he was acquitted. Is this guy a survivor or what? Even Bill Clinton tips his hat to the Zoomer. Of course the big question on inauguration day was, which wife he was going to bring with him on stage. He is a Zulu and the Zulu are polygamous. In the end wife #1 emerged victorious, with wives number two and three relegated to watching from the audience, but man….you know things had to be pretty tense in the Zuma household for a few days. Of course, looking at wife number one, she doesn't look like she takes any prisoners.
Oh….THAT video…..
So I'm sure you've heard of or seen the torture video that the folks in Abu Dhabi wish would go away. Apparently the half brother of Abu Dhabi and UAE ruler Khalifa Bin Zayyid Al Nahyan is a serious psychopath, who videotapes his torture sessions and then likes to watch them again later at home on the 50 inch plasma screen with a bucket of popcorn. Yes, seriously weird stuff. But, in his defense, I have to say that when you're busy working up a sweat in a torture session, you don't really get a moment to step back and admire your handiwork. And besides, every professional tapes himself at work. Comics tape their act to see how a joke works, golfers videotape their swing. It is important to hone your craft. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, because that whole "half brother of the ruler" thing may not be enough to give him a walk. And have you seen his picture? Put some mascara and eye makeup on him and he IS an Arab version of Alex from A Clockwork Orange. In the end…Abu Dhabi wants that civil nuclear agreement real bad. So…clean energy vs. nut job. I say nut job loses. Oh...and you know Dick Cheney is thinking.... whoa...this dude takes his work seriously. AND he speaks Arabic. We coulda used a guy like that.
