A Good Thing!

Last November, Amazon announced their new program Frustration-Free Packing. This is the best idea I have heard in a long, long time.
On their web site Amazon describes the program:
A multi-year initiative designed to alleviate “wrap rage”, features recyclable boxes that are easy to open and free of excess materials such as hard plastic clamshell cases, plastic bindings, and wire ties. The product itself is exactly the same – we’ve just streamlined the packaging.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sent out a letter to customers the day the program began. He also provided a link to all the other wonderful methods that Amazon is helping to reduce waste and save energy. Good job, Amazon!

Who hasn’t gone absolutely ballistic while trying to open the box for a toy?
Who hasn’t held up all the wire twist ties and said, “Can you believe all these where holding the toy in the box?”
Who hasn’t cut their finger trying to cut open one of those plastic clam shells?

… all while your kid is screaming for their new toy!

Not to mention all the benefits to the environment:

  • 100% recyclable cardboard (Not to mention all the inks used to create those beautiful box graphics that really aren’t needed at this point because they aren’t trying to grab the attention of the customer on the store shelf.)
  • The "right-sized" box for any given item to be shipped to a customer, based on that item's dimensions and weight is another program that Amazon has developed.

Can we all agree that this is just one more way to make the holiday shopping season easier? All the frustration-free toys would make perfect grandparent holiday or birthday gifts.

So far, Amazon has designed 16 toys with the frustration-free packaging. They want to hear what you have to say. Visit their Packaging Feedback Program and give the program your thumbs up.
