Fun Summer toys: Super Soaker©
It’s summer!
It’s gettin’ hot outside!
It’s time for water, lots of water!
It’s time for Super Soaker©!
This year is the 20th anniversary of the Super Soaker. Even the story behind the Super Soaker is fun.
The first sparks of the idea that started the creation of the Super Soaker was in 1982. Dr. Lonnie Johnson, a nuclear engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, was working on an idea for a heat pump that used water as opposed to Freon. He hooked up the model of the pump to his bathroom sink at his home.
"I turned around and I was shooting this thing across the bathroom into the tub and the stream of water was so powerful that the curtains were swirling in the breeze it sent out. I thought, 'This would make a great water gun’.” Be sure to go to the end of this article and see Lonnie on CBS Morning Show. And, the rest is history!
Super Soaker fun facts:
- The original name was the Power Drencher.
- Took eight years before consumers saw the product.
- Original manufacturer was Laramie.
- Though involved with several manufacturers, it wasn’t until March of 1989 that a deal was sealed. In a meeting with Larami, after Johnson shot water across the room with the gun, President, Myung Song, exclaimed, “Wow”. That’s all it took and a deal was made.
- A Larami employee, Bruce D’Andrade helped develop the water gun. Johnson and D'Andrade’s names are both on the box for the Collector's Edition Super Soaker® 50.
- Larami was purchased by Hasbro in 1995.
- Super Soakers is a hobby!
Come to think of it, the Super Soaker would make a "cool" Father's Day Gift!
