A few months ago, pictures all over the media showed Angelina Jolie and her little girl, Shiloh, walking through a Tokyo airport. In this photo seen in US Weekly, People, Life & Style and the New York Post, Shiloh is holding her mom’s hand. Now, wait a second, what’s this? In Shiloh’s other hand is a doll. According to reports, this doll is a Penelope Peapod doll and a popular toy of the daughter’s of Julianne Moore, Brooke Shields and Courtney Cox.
Hold the phone, where have I been? I take great pride in knowing all that is “hot toy”. I had not heard of Penelope Peapod until I read about the Shiloh photo. I googled and swooned. I fell in love!

From the Penelope Peapod website about Penelope’s Birth:
When Shelagh Herzog was growing up in Austin, Texas, her grandmother hand-crafted a crocheted carry-along toy using yarn, an empty margarine container and a tiny baby doll. Years later, while cleaning out the attic, Shelagh came across the doll. Remembering how much she loved it, she imagined a modern, high-end version of the doll.

From the Penelope Peapod website:
Reminiscent of a time when toys were made by hand for children to use their imaginations to create a world of pretend play. Penelope Peapod is fun and fashion combined. Little girls like to carry a handbag, just like Mom, and Penelope Peapod lets her bring her doll along for the ride. Great for Travel: across town, around the world, or for pretend play at home.

Having been a little girl once (shocking, I know), I remember one special doll I had in a little luggage case. This doll had an aura about her, she was special… and I put her to bed in her case while I went to bed. I also remember taking this doll on vacation once. What a fantastic idea for responsible parenting: while traveling, let your child take a familiar toy for comfort. Traveling to foreign places can be unsettling (even for adults). A soft, nurturing doll that’s just the right size is a perfect traveling companion.

In this fun article in last month’s Galley Gossip: Passenger of the month - Lorna Brett Howard by Heather Poole, Heather and Lorna discuss how Penelope Peapod is the perfect travel toy. Just incase you were wondering, Lorna Brett Howard is the former president of Chicago NOW.

Also, from the Penelope Peapod website:
With her idea and basic drawings in hand, Shelagh approached her friend Pamela Bell, a co-founder of Kate Spade handbags. Pamela introduced her to a sample maker who made prototypes using Kate Spade fabrics.

Did you look at those fabrics? Absolutely gorgeous! The fabrics, the basket, the clothing speak “high quality” to me, and I’m sure they speak “extra-special and precious” to little girls.

And, lastly, from the Penelope Peapod website:
Small businesses started by Moms are the fastest growing segment of our economy in the United States. It is exciting - and often exhausting -- to be part of this trend. We are committed to moms helping moms. To that end, we donate and volunteer for several organizations helping Moms and women all of the world, including Baby Buggy, Mapendo International and WHEDCO. For more information, visit our Moms Helping Moms section.

Gasp! Where can I go to buy all the dolls? A doll that gives back!
Here’s the link to three of the organizations that Penelope Peapod supports.
Here’s an article about Lorna Brett Howard’s travels to Kenya.

Once again, the perfect gift for grandparents to give or for a new baby gift. I love toys as gifts that can be held dear for years and can possibly be passed down through the generations. There's three beautiful gift baskets on their website but it states that they are currently sold out. I can see why!

And, for all your little Penelope Peapod fans, there's a fun place to play on the Penelope Peapod site called Penelope's Playplace.
