This week is Children’s Book Week!
Yesterday, I was reminded of this fun week by Lori Calabrese’s great article on “Ten ways to celebrate Children’s Book Week.” Her article starts out “Celebrated since 1919, Children's Book Week is dedicated to spreading the word about children's literature and encouraging the joy of reading.” Since 1919? That’s fantastic! Link to article here.
I’d like to add one more way to celebrate Children’s Book Week:
Have a party with your favorite children’s book character!
There are several companies that make toys to go with children’s books. What a fun way to add to the pleasure of reading. What a wonderful way for a child to connect to a character in a children’s book. Also, when you add a plush character with a children’s book, it makes the perfect baby gift and special child’s birthday present.
Yottoy has some fantastic plush toys to go with many fun and classic children’s books.
Just check out their great selection here.
Kohl’s department store also has great promotions which includes hardcover children’s picture books and coordinating plush toys for $5 each, with money going to support Kohl’s Cares for Kids, the retailer’s charity foundation to benefit children’s health and education initiatives nationwide.
You can go online and see the books and plush here.
Just check out the fantastic selection of plush characters from Castlemere Books here. I want every character!
ONE of my very favorite children’s book characters is Bear from Janet Steven's Caldecott Honor winning picture book, Tops and Bottoms. I had the honor of attending two of Janet's presentations at the Nevada SCBWI conference in 1994 or so. She went over the entire design and writing process of the book and I fell in love with the characters, the story, and the humor. Evidently, once the book was published, so did the entire nation.
From the first page: "ONCE upon a time there lived a very lazy bear who had lots of money and lots of land..."

Truly, a bear after MY heart!
Isn’t he so cute?
So, go grab your favorite childrens’s book character and let’s celebrate Children’s Book Week!
(I’d love to hear who your favorite character is in the comments!)
