In dreams, animals sometimes represent our fears, anxieties, and our passions. They can symbolize our deeper instincts and the vital forces we often repress. They may be the enemies that chase us, intent upon our destruction or be our friends, messengers or guardians.

Today’s dreamer, Sam, shares her most recent animal dream. Here’s an excerpt.

The Dream of the Comforting Canary

I hid behind a large set of trees watching a deer get killed by some invisible force. There was a black crow eating its stomach while it was still alive. When I tried to intervene, a swarm of vultures flew down toward me. I felt so scared I began to cry and ran away listening to the sound of screeching birds. I got back to my house and went into my bathroom. When I looked into the mirror, there were no tears on my face. Then I saw a yellow canary singing outside my window. He found his way into my room and landed on my shoulder. I quickly began to feel happy.

Dream Interpretation

The deer in this dream may represent the dreamer’s own sense of being threatened by something or someone in her life that she has yet to identify. The crow is typically considered to be a bird of augury. It seems that in this dream, it foreshadows the arrival of goodness, like the crow sent out of the Ark by Noah to see whether Earth had reappeared after the flood. Our dreamer’s crow is a bearer of good tidings by announcing the yellow canary’s song that soothed the dreamer’s spiritual distress.
