Putting aside Facebook and MySpace, there are at least 500,000 social networks on the web, and the bulk of them all belong to one website -- Ning.

So how do we know that there are at least 500,000 social networks out there? Well, we took our rough count from Ning, a build-your-own social network. Ning as has been around for a while, but recently the company's CEO Gina Bianchini told reporters that Ning has about half a million social networks under it umbrella.  (Obviously, there are many more, but with new networks cropping up daily, it's impossible to keep count).

Still, 500,000 is impressive. But what does it all mean? In a nutshell, it looks like DIY has taken hold of social networking with a vengeance. And that means you don't have to be Mark Zuckerberg or Tom Anderson to start your own social network.

In fact, all you need is an idea, a few minutes, and well, friends.

Here are some of my favorite social networks on Ning:

  • Meet the Phlockers, which bills itself as "premiere destination on the internet for tropical minded individuals to connect and share personal experiences and memories."
  • My Manilow Network, which has more than 2,000 members.
  • Wholesale Pagan Supplies, which has surprisingly few members given the current economic crisis.

Feel free to leave a comment suggesting a social network. Or, better yet, cruise on over to Ning and just start your own.
