Some great downtown movie theaters
Village East Cinema
181-189 2nd Ave.
New York, NY 10003
Comments: This is a great place to watch small independent features as well as big budget movies. When you go inside you really feel like you’ve stepped back to a time when going to the movies was a special occasion, and the place carries a lot of stories with it. It opened as The Yiddish Art Theater and was known for several big budget stage productions. Also apparently it’s the place where Walter Matthau got his start, working at the concession stand.
Angelika Film Center
18 West Houston St.
New York, NY 10012
Comments: This theater caters to people who enjoy small budget, and at times unconventional, movies. The only really negative thing about going to see movies here is that the Angelika is located nearby a subway station so it’s not improbable for your movie watching experience to be disturbed by the screeching of subway cars.
Regal Union Square Stadium 14
850 Broadway
New York, NY 10003
Comments: In my opinion this is the best place downtown to watch the latest big budget movie. It has over 13 screens and the seats have plenty of space for you to stretch your legs. The downside of watching movies here are that ticket lines can be long and also tickets to whatever must-see new movie that's opening this week go pretty quickly if you don’t get their soon enough.
AMC Loews Village 7
66 3rd Ave.
New York, NY 10003
Comments: The first thing you notice about the exterior of the theater are the large glass panes giving the building a very distinctive look. Although not as large as the Union Square movie theater it is still a very nice place to relax and enjoy a movie.
