A new movie opened last Friday and without much publicity has earned fourth place in weekend box office gross. It opened in less than a thousand theaters and took in six and a half million dollars. The most famous actor in the cast is Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron, and eschewing the usual promotional venues it was heavily marketed in Christian church groups. The movie I’m talking about is Fireproof.
I have not seen the movie, but I have seen the trailer and several clips on the movie’s official website. When the movie is named in articles it is always followed by phrases like “Christian values.” For many, this movie may seem like a very bad joke to come out of the Christian film industry, but from what I’ve seen the movie looks to be a sincere story about a guy trying to save the relationship he has with his wife.
It’s not reinventing the wheel, and some characters seem to be mere vessels for the writer and director to promote their ideas about wholesome Christian values but from the clips I’ve watched, the movie has a few exciting scenes and also the main characters seem to be fully developed characters. It may not be the best movie to come out this year, but it is far from the worst.
