The Godfather Trilogy has just come out today on DVD and Blu-Ray. Many fans of the franchise who may have bought the previous boxset that was released several years ago may grimace at the thought of having to reach into their wallets again and buy this new release, but this newly restored edition is well worth the purchase.
As stated on the official Godfather website “There is a general rule regarding the condition of original film elements in the archival world, which basically states that the more popular the film, the more wear and tear will be found on the elements.” Robert A. Harris, who also did the careful restoration of Rear Window, started the process of rescuing this movie in 2006. And with the help of several people involved in the franchise, including Coppola himself, they carefully gathered every print they could find. The negatives they had suffered from scratches, were shrunken, and/or had severe tears. Luckily for fans though digital restoration technology has advanced greatly and they were able to bring this trilogy back to the best possible quality it can be.
The great thing about the Godfather trilogy is that in each movie Coppola never underestimates an audience’s intelligence or attention span. Although these films are classified as gangster pictures, they operate on several levels. It can easily be said that the entire story is about a man who struggles with his belief that good things can come from evil actions. This is a movie that deserves to be watched in the best possible quality available and thanks to the new DVD and Blu-Ray releases people have the opportunity to do that.
