Processed foods are those that have been altered. These foods can be described as “convenience” foods because they can often be prepared easily and stored extensively. These foods include sugar laden cereals, quick fix meals in boxes and bags, and anything containing chemical additives, coloring and flavor enhancers. While these foods may be quick to cook up and pleasant to eat, they may be more harmful than assumed. Here are some fast facts about the fast food in your kitchen:

• They contain added salt, refined sugar and flavor enhancers that can deaden your taste buds to healthy alternatives.
• They contain unknown ingredients (think hot dogs).
• They contain synthetic vitamins that are added after processing. These vitamins are inferior to those occurring naturally.
• They are a lower in quality and nutrition than their natural counterparts.
• They may be more expensive, for example consider a bag of whole potatoes versus a box of instant.

Healthy Processed Foods
Considering these facts, it’s not a bad idea to renounce the ravioli and pass on the pressed ham. These are examples of poor quality processed foods—but not all processed foods are unhealthy. Frozen veggies, pasteurized milk and many fruit and vegetable juices are healthy yet processed.

Choosing healthier foods typically means staying close to the produce section of the store and steering clear of the snack aisles. Spend some time in the kitchen, pull out the chopping board and put away the can opener. Honing your homemaker skills may leave you with a slimmer body, healthier heart and happier household.
