Sorry, Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Your box office may have ruled the pound, but your lackluster reviews and audience reaction got you ousted from our exclusive weekend ratings kennel. (See last week’s weekend roundup for a more detailed explanation of the system.) So read on for the Top 10 films of Oct. 10-12 when critics’ reviews, word-of-mouth and box office are combined (last week’s rating in parentheses).
1) Body Of Lies (NR). The box office was decent but unspectacular, as were reviews, but a 7.9 IMDB user rating helped bump Leo DiCaprio’s film to #1.
2) Appaloosa (1). Though it was ousted from the top slot, Ed Harris’ new western continued to put up strong numbers across the board.
3) Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (3). Box office decline was mild, and a rising IMDB rating (from 6.5 last week to 6.9) may have Michael Cera rethinking those retirement rumors.
4) The Dark Knight (NR). A surprising bump back into the B.O. Top 20 made this mammoth hit re-eligible for our list, and its #1 ranking among critics and moviegoers propels it back into the Top 5.
5) Burn After Reading (2). Box office slipped outside the Top 10, but on our charts the film is still standing as tall as Brad Pitt’s hair.
6 tie) The Duchess (NR). Opening wide, Keira Knightley’s latest scored strongly at Metacritic, where its 62 score was good for fifth place among the B.O. Top 20.
6 tie) Quarantine (NR). Unlike other horror hits whose reviews are downright scary, this film’s 64 tomatometer rating was highly respectable, helping it tie with period piece The Duchess—quite the duo.
8) Ghost Town (5). Falling only two spots on the box-office ladder, this highly acclaimed comedy hangs in there for one more week.
9) Religulous (4). It hasn’t pulled in Michael Moore-level grosses, but Bill Maher’s doc about religion has viewers seeing the light to the tune of a 7.4 IMDB rating.
10) City of Ember (NR). Decent numbers across the board, including a #7 Rotten Tomatoes ranking in a week low on critical faves, allowed this fantasy pic to equal its #10 box office ranking on our charts.
