After the Los Angeles Lakers' second straight ugly loss Sunday, much of the talk was not about the team as a whole, but rather its most important part.
In the fourth quarter last night, Kobe Bryant re-aggravated a groin injury that he first suffered against the New Orleans Hornets. Kobe went to the locker room with just over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter and did not return.
The Lakers have already seen their share of injury problems this season with Pau Gasol yet to play and Andrew Bynum missing two games. So news that Kobe Bryant would have to sit out might just cause the L.A. faithful to start thinking "the curse" had headed west.
Fortunately for the Lakers, Kobe has made it clear that he won't be missing any time. According to J.A. Adande's article on ESPN's TrueHoop, when Kobe was asked if he would miss any games due to the groin injury he replied:
"Absolutely not...not an option."
Although Kobe will play, it is clear from last night that the injury is affecting him. Kobe was making defenders look like fourth graders early in the season with his newly refined post game, but he struggled both Friday night against Denver and last night against Houston (both Laker losses).
Groin injuries, much like Pau's hamstring injury, tend to linger. So Kobe and the Lakers aren't out of the woods quite yet. The good news is their other All-Star, Gasol, should make his return to practice this week. As of yet, this is the only chance we've gotten to see Pau in action this season, and I think we'd all agree that Pau's low post game is much prettier to watch.
