One of the greatest modern movements is the Seiko Spring Drive - featuring a fascinating and sophisticated combination of mechanical watch luxury, features, and construction, with the accuracy of a quartz watch (by using a quartz regulator). Watches with these movements are thankfully showing up outside of Japan more, and the first "world" collection with the Seiko Spring Drive movement in it is the beautiful new Seiko Ananta collection. The Ananta collection also features other models with more traditional automatic mechanical movements in them.
For the full hands-on treatment, see the link below. Prices for the Spring Drive movement based Ananta watches are in the $5,000 - $8,000 range - but you get a lot what you pay for. In addition to Seiko's famous level of quality, fit and finish, and functionality, you have a luxurious hand construction, technology that no one else has, and style that is eye catching. Two movements are available - one with a GMT complication and power reserve indicator, and another watch that also adds a 12 hour chronograph to the aforementioned functions.
Clearly this type of Seiko watch is above and beyond from what most people would expect with a Seiko timepiece. No worries though, even though the price is more than you are used to with a Seiko, so is everything else. A stunning line of watches that proves Seiko has what it takes to compete with the European watch makers in the luxury watch market.
