The Denver Outlaws were the team to beat during the whole of the 2009 Major League Lacrosse regular season, going wire to wire in first place following an opening day loss to Chicago. This did not translate into post-season success, however, as Denver fell to the Toronto National in the Finals following a one-point victory over Boston in the semis. This is the second time Denver has gone all the way to the final game of the season and come away empty handed. Though dominant all summer long, when it mattered most the Outlaws came up short.
The Outlaws may have peaked too early, hitting their stride during the mid-season and falling off a bit heading into the playoffs. Teams such as Boston and Toronto entered the playoffs on high notes, becoming more familiar with their personnel at just the right time. Maybe they became too comfortable, believing their own hype and expecting to roll out the ball and win the thing. Either way, the Outlaws will have a long off season to contemplate their last second loss. It was a disappointing ending for one of the most complete teams in the league, who could beat you on offense or shut you down on defense, who could play as a team or beat you with their stars. The individual accolades piled up at the end of the season for several key members of the team, but they will have to wait until next year for another shot at raising the championship trophy above their heads.
