As well as the Outlaws defense has played this season, ranking first in overall defense, the offense has been similarly impressive during their current six game win streak. Denver ranks second in goals with 107 and trail only the Toronto Nationals who have played an extra game thus far this season. The Boston Cannons have put up similar numbers despite their 4-3 record, and have three straight victories coming into Saturday's game at Mile High. This 4th of July match-up should prove to be Denver's toughest game so far this season.
The Cannon's defense is anchored by goalie Mike Levin, who ranks second in goals against average behind Jesse Schwartzman at 11.74. The defense has only allowed 84 goals on the season, which ranks 3rd in the MLL so they will test the Outlaws ability to score, especially from the midfield. Fortunately, the Outlaws have a depth of scoring from all over the field.
Brendan Mundorf and Matt Brown have had the hot hand for Denver as of late. Mundorf shares the league lead in points with 30 and Brown is third in the MLL in goals scored with 19 — including ten in the last two games. After a slow start, Brown has found his rhythm, scoring in bunches from the crease, while Mundorf has been the model of consistency all season in leading the Outlaws to a league best 6-1 record. The potent attack unit also features converted midfielder Drew Westervelt, who has found his niche as a distributer. His 13 assists is tied for second in the league, but he is no scoring slouch himself with 12 goals of his own. If Boston attempts to collapse on the lefty Brown inside, look for Westervelt to have a big game with his outside shot.
One of the keys to victory this week will be the transition game of the Outlaws. With multiple threats from the midfield, including Brian Langtry, Josh Sims, and Sean Lindsay — not to mention rookies Max Seibald, and Dan Hardy, who are still finding their roles in Brian Reese's offense — Denver should be able to take advantage of their run and gun style. The Outlaws boast one of the most athletic teams in the MLL and in their past two games against Toronto, Denver played up tempo lacrosse creating scoring chance in bunches. Look for Denver to push the ball, especially considering they have legitimate scoring threats from the defensive midfield in Nate Watkins and Mike Ward.
This will be the second time Boston and Denver have faced each other this season, with Denver coming up with a one-goal victory the last time they met. That game was each teams second of the season, so this one will have a much different feel as much can change in this league in a very short time.
Don't forget that this week's match will be complimented by fireworks after the game. You can purchase tickets through the Denver Outlaws website. The game will also be rebroadcast on ESPN-2 on Tuesday, July 7th at noon MST.
