Some the best young basketball players in the state are at Hoops this weekend, to play in the Eddie Ford Stinulus Tournament. One of those players is Jeffersontown standout Desmond Dorsey. Here is a re-cap of Saturday's action.
Scott County
Scott County went 2-1 on the day. They defeated the Georgia Ballers in their firat game of the day, lost to Southern Indiana in the second game. They bounced back in their third game and defeated Higher Level.
Ge-Lawn Guyn played great all day. The 6-foot-3, 170 pound combo guard was shot the ball well from the outside. He was often the most athletic player on the court and he used his athletic ability to drive to the basket. He was most successful when he penatrated because he would either finish, get fouled or dish the ball to an open teammate.
I watched Chad Jackson play about a month ago and he continues to get better each time I see him. He still needs to work on his jump shot but it is getting better. He made several very nice passes when he drove to the basket and he did a very nice job of adjusting his body in the air and drawing contact.
Saturday was the first time I have Dakotah Euton play since he de-committed from Kentucky. The 6-foot-8, senior-to--be, shot the ball well from the outside but he still needs to work on defense. More on him later.
The player I was most impressed with on Scott County sophomore-to-be was Tamron Manning. This kid has the chance to be a star. He's very athletic. He told me he doesn't have any scholarship offers yet but some of the biggest names in college basketball have been sending letters. More on him later in the week.
Manning isn't the only impressive sophomore-to-be on Scott County's team. Remember the name Isaih Ivey. The 6-foot-3 Ivey shot the ball very well from behind the arc. He's left handed and he plays similar to former Arizona State star James Harden. He is a player to keep an eye on in the coming years.
I spoke with Scott County coach Billy Hicks and he told me that former player Richie Phares is doing well after tearing his ACL during the season. Hicks say Phares has "healed remakably fast".
Royal Family
The Royal family got a nice win over the Lexington Ice, in their last game of the day. Jeffersontown sophomore-to-be Desmond Dorsey is a player who continues to improve. The 6-foot-2 combo guard should play a much bigger role for the Chargers next season, now that Aaron Cosby has decided to transfer to prep school.
Fairdale junior-to-be Josh Stroud also played well. The 6-foot-5 Stroud told me he plans on playing guard next season and he has picked up two scholarship offers. More on him later in the week.
Kentucky Blazers
The Kentucky Blazers have a very nice player, in Trey Williams. Williams, who plays for Greenup County, is 6-foot-6 and he will be a junior next season. He very athletic and he has long arms. If he continues to develope, he could play Division I someday.
Names to Remember
The Ville 15U have several players that everyone will know is the next few years. One of the those players is Darryl Hicks. The 6-foot-3 Hicks played for Shelby County this season as an eighth grader. Hicks is an extremly athletic player, who can get to rim and finish. Another player to remember is James Quick. Quick played for Newburg Middle School this past season and he plans on playing both football and basketball for Trinity next season. Jason Hatcher will also play for Trinity next season. Hatcher is a standout on the football field. He is a big strong kid, who's body is developed like a kid who is a junior or senior in high school.
I normally only cover players that are in high school but there are a couple of kids in middle school that are worth mentioniong. Quinten Snyder, a point guard for Ramsey Middle School, will just be an eighth grader next season. He's extremely fast and he's an excellent passser.
Another name to remember is Brandon Johnson. Johnson also plays for Ramsey Middle School and he will be a seventh grader next season. He's a very good outside shooter and he play very smart.
