The Unborn follows Casey Beldon (Odette Yustmen) as she begins to experience frightful nightmares and physical anomalies. She begins to suspect that she is being haunted by her twin who died in the womb, but through her own investigations she finds that the soul of her deceased brother may be possessed by something much worse and have connections to events starting back during the holocaust.

This film is just your typical run of the mill horror movie that is relying too heavily on computer effects and loud music cues to stir up any sort of scare from the audience. Most of the cast performs well, but the plot is reaching and the “scary parts” lose all effect due to obvious CGI. Odette Yustmen is easy on the eyes, but I can’t even begin to count how many horror movies feature a heroine trying to solve an evil mystery in their sexy unmentionables. Overall, I know there are a lot of people out there who enjoy almost any horror movie that is released, and if you are one of those people this movie falls right in line with pretty much everything else coming out these days. However, if you are looking for something a little different, my recommendation would be to go check out Drag Me to Hell which is still showing in theaters.

 

Next up we have the action movie Push, starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning. I really wanted to like this movie and I lowered my expectations as much as possible going into it, but it still was just a jumbled mess of action and plot points that have been played out in almost every action movie. Admittedly, there were some pretty cool action scenes that made me sit up a little more in my chair, but ultimately I was disappointed. I can’t completely say “stay away from this one” because there is definitely some good in the movie, but I just can’t say whether or not it’s worth the price to pick this one up if you haven’t seen it.

 

Now, to change gears a little bit, we have the cult-classic Mystery Science Theater 3000: XV coming to DVD today. Joel, Mike, and all the good ol’ robots are back to taunt four and a half obscure and terrible sci-fi/horror movies. Included on the DVD is “The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy ”,“ The Girl in Lover’s Lane ”,“ Racket Girls and, the gem of them all, “Zombie Nightmare” starring Adam West. If you are already a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, I’m sure you don’t need any more convincing. If you have never even heard of it, all you need to know is this: It’s a guy and three robots sitting around making fun of old campy horror and sci-fi movies and this DVD would be a great way to get your first taste of the show.
