The New York City Department of Education today announced that the second round of the pre-kindergarten admissions process will begin Monday, July 13. Families who do not already have a public school pre-kindergarten placement can apply for a seat beginning that day. Children must turn four years old by December 31, 2009, to be eligible. Beginning July 13, families can visit the Department’s Web site at www.nyc.gov/ schools/PreK to obtain a directory of pre-kindergarten programs with available seats and apply online. Paper copies of the directory and application will be available at borough enrollment offices and elementary school summer school sites on Friday, July 17. The application deadline is Friday, July 31, and the Department will notify families about placements by the end of August.
Families who do not have Internet access at home can visit their local public library branch to complete the online application after they sign up for a free library card. Parents can call 311 for the hours and location of their neighborhood’s library branch. Families can also choose to complete and mail the paper application included in the directory instead.
The directory also contains a list of pre-kindergarten programs run by community-based organizations (CBOs). Families should return applications for CBO programs directly to the providers they choose. Families are encouraged to contact CBOs about seat availability, since they may continue to accept applications as long as they have openings. CBOs will notify families directly about placements.
