U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek to testify before Judiciary Committee on python bill
For several years, scientists have been fretting about the influx of pythons and other non-native snakes in the Everglades (see 12/06 CBS News article) and recently, man has been fighting back. In July of this year, a hunt began whereby licensed “snake experts” went into the swamp, armed with firearms and traps, to capture the intruders which can grow to more than 20 feet. So far, more than 250 snakes, including a 17-footer have been captured.
Next up, the pythons face the long arm of the federal law.

U.S. Congressman Kendrick B. Meek, H.R. 2811 would list three types of invasive species -- Burmese, Northern African Rock, and Southern African Rock Pythons – as an “injurious animal” and thereby ban their import and trade. Meek will testify about his legislation before the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security of the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 12:00 noon. He hopes to impress upon his colleagues the devastating impact that these non-native pythons have had on the delicate ecosystem in the Everglades. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida is the lead sponsor of a companion bill on the Senate side.
