File - U.S. President Barack Obama addresses the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in this Sept. 23, 2009 file photo. President Obama on Friday Oct. 9, 2009 won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

President Barack Obama woke up this morning to the news that he was the fourth U.S. President to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Honored for both his promises and his efforts so far to promote international cooperation and peace, Obama becomes only the third sitting president to win the award. The last was Woodrow Wilson who helped establish the precurser to the United Nations.  Jimmy Carter won two decades after leaving the presidency.

An amusing aside, Obama found out this morning at 6:00am.  The Nobel Committee could have called much earlier but announced that they did not want to wake the president. This is probably not the 2:00am phone call critics envisioned.
