Busy Monday for politics in South Florida: Obama in Miami, Rubio in Lauderdale, early voting begins

It may be enough to make a political junkie’s head spin.
Miami-Dade County opened its booths this morning for the early voting period to decide mayoral and commissioner races, while a number of cities began their general elections as well. Up north, underdog candidate for U.S. Senate, Marco Rubio, will speak at the Broward Republican Executive Committee meeting in Fort Lauderdale at 7:00pm. Meanwhile, President Obama is set to arrive in Miami at 5:30 pm, heading from the airport to the Fontainebleau Hotel for a fundraiser. President Obama will speak at approximately 7:30 pm, ending what will likely be a hectic day for political correspondents as all three happenings have important implications.
The county race pits Tomas Regalado against Joe Sanchez in their bid for mayor; numerous hopefuls in the commissioner’s race for Districts 3, 4, and 5; and a whopping 19 candidates for the several open Coconut Grove council. North Miami will hold a run-off election for mayor between Andre Pierre and Frank Wolland, and several cities will decide charter issues and/or city commissioner races. Continuing, in most cases, until Sunday, Miami-Dade residents can vote in several locations throughout the county; On November 3rd, voting must take place at each person’s assigned polling station.
Marco Rubio, who is behind in both the polls and money raised, is nonetheless gaining ground on the governor. Broward County has the third-largest population of registered Republicans, and Rubio does have an appeal there despite Crist’s good relations with the county. Broward plans to hold a Republican straw vote, and Rubio hopes to vault himself into serious contention with a victory in the non-binding vote.
Speaking before the Broward Republican Executive Committee is a start. Look for Rubio to spend some time in Broward in the hopes of pulling off the upset.
His job secure for at least three more years, Obama comes to town for a fundraiser. Joined by joined by Sen. Bill Nelson, Rep. Kendrick Meek, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Obama’s appearance benefits the Democratic Senatorial and Congressional Campaign Committees. Before arriving in Miami during our rush hour, Obama will be in Jacksonville to meet with members of the Marines and Navy; Tomorrow, he will be in Central Florida touring a new FPL facility.
