Most non-theists are well aware that religious believers have a fairly wide agenda of things for which they are forever lobbying government to institute upon the whole of us. They want evolution in science textbooks replaced with intelligent design, the Ten Commandments posted in the courts and of course an eternally free ride of tax exemption. Although they are passionate about all of their ventures, there are two particular things that they seem to focus on with absolute ferocity: homosexuality and abortion. Being gay is sin under any circumstances, and abortion is murder. (However, killing is OK if done in the name of God in combat.)
There are numerous passages in the Bible which can be interpreted to condemn homosexuality, but Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 are probably the most frequently referenced. “Abortion” isn’t mentioned specifically in the Bible, but theists usually use a combination of the passages referencing a baby’s existence in the womb and the 6th Commandment of “Thou shall not murder.” And for the sake of the discussion, we’ll ignore all of the passages condoning slavery, stoning people to death or polygamy and say that God was only kidding with those and that the homosexual and abortion references are the only ones he really meant for them to follow.
With all of that said, I’d like to pose a hypothetical situation.
For years, scientists have been studying the human genome, and one of the things they were looking for was a “gay gene.” Some people want to know if homosexuals are born gay, while others insist that they are just sick or evil. Though none of the studies that have been done so far have revealed a specific “gay gene”, there are many discoveries that still suggest the possibility of homosexuality being a biological trait and not a choice. After all, we are learning more about our world and universe every day thanks to science, so we haven’t ruled out being born gay. Now I ask the questions…
IF it were discovered that people were actually born gay, would that be the exception to the anti-abortion rule?
If God truly condemns homosexuals, would it be acceptable to identify and abort them before they were born? (Sort of a Gay Minority Report.)
OR
Would it prove once and for all that homosexuals are in fact beautiful children of God, and thus entitling them to the same rights as heterosexuals?
