In my previous article, "Coming out of the atheist closet", I provided a small list of organizations for those of you locals looking for information or good company. With larger groups, you usually pay an annual fee to cover the costs of running the organization such as: web site maintenance, advertising, legal affairs and perhaps building maintenance or leasing fees. Many people let out a groan when fees or dues are mentioned, but I think we all realize that the money to sustain them has to come from somewhere. Although in this article I am going to mention a few different bits of information, I want to first focus on the Phoenix Atheists Meetup Group.
I chose to highlight this specific group because it is really at the grassroots foundation of the others. By visiting the Phoenix Atheists Meetup Group online, you can join the group in a matter of seconds. If you aren't already registered on Meetup.com, it's FREE and only takes a minute to do so. In case you're unfamiliar with Meetup.com, it's a web site where you can find other groups of people who share your same interests and passions. The great thing about this, versus more 'official' organizations, is that it is a social group made up of like-minded, everyday people like you. Not only will you be able to share ideas and information about the larger Atheist community, you will get to meet new friends and enjoy their company at local hot-spots, dives, or wherever you all choose to hang out. You will also find that many of the people you meet through the Phoenix Atheists Meetup Group are also members of the larger, more 'official' organizations I listed in my previous article.
Now on to a few other items.
I have started to add lists of information to my column here. They appear on the right side of the column and contain links. So far I have added Local Organizations, Videos / Films and Recommended Books. I will be adding more over time and would appreciate any and all suggestions you might have, especially if they are local in nature.
Also, there is a link titled "Subscribe to Email" which appears at the top and bottom of my articles. Please subscribe so that you will automatically be notified when I post new articles. The more subscribers I have, the further the information will spread!
One last thing. I know as well as anyone else that atheists are some of the most despised people in the country, if not the world. I strongly urge you to comment on my articles and email me (email link in bio), but let us keep it civil. If someone starts name-calling and/or insulting you or others, let that be their advertisement for feeble-mindedness and not yours.
Thank you very much for reading my column - it's going to ROCK!
