There are two special education programs at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore. The DePaul program for language-based disabilities and the St. Giles program for students with developmental disabilities.
The DePaul Special Education Program
The students in the DePaul special education program all have diagnosed language-based learning disabilities. To qualify, they must meet the same standard as for the public school system in that they must have average or above average intelligence while struggling in a specific academic area.
The Saint Giles Special Education Program
The St. Giles program was named after the patron saint of children with disabilities and serves children with developmental disabilities. Because of the special needs of these students, the numbers in this program are kept low. For the 2009-2010 school year there are only two students enrolled in the St. Giles program. This program focuses on both academics as well as vocational readiness.
Testing and Placement Requirements for the Special Education Programs
Mount Saint Joseph does not perform any education testing for placement into either special education program. Instead, they refer students to private testers and to the Baltimore City Public Schools. In addition to this testing the school looks at report cards and teacher recommendations. Finally, all students and parents must go through an interview prior to admission.
