Why are pro-abortion organizations like Planned Parenthood and NARAL so offended by crisis pregnancy centers and pro-life pharmacies? They claim to support choice, but only if that choice is having an abortion. Programs to support pregnant women refusing abortion are vigorously opposed. The most recent such effort is in Baltimore. With the backing of Planned Parenthood, the Baltimore City Council introduced the City Council Bill 09-0406, "Limited-Service Pregnancy Centers--Disclaimers" according to the Diocese of Baltimore Catholic Review. This legislation would require pregnancy support centers to post a disclaimer stating that they do not provide abortion or contraceptions. Centers who do not post such a disclaimer would be fined $500 daily.
Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien protested the legislation in a letter to Baltimore City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. He pointed out that this requirement is harassment targeting pro-life centers. Nothing in the centers' phone book or web page advertising would suggest abortion or contraception is provided. The legislation does not require abortion facilities to post a similar disclaimer stating the services they do not provide such as parenting classes, maternity and infant clothing, and infant formula.
Planned Parenthood was also behind similar legislation in the Maryland General Assembly. That bill never made it out of committee. The pro-abortion lobbying group NARAL pushed a bill in Virginia that would require pro-life pharmacies to prominently display notices that they do not prescribe contraceptives or abortifacients. While these pro-life facilities are happy to proclaim their pro-life convictions, the state notices were meant to serve as "scarlet letters" labeling the facilities as defective. That bill was also defeated.
