Hollywood Blvd. will be converted into a "massive, multi-faceted screening room" featuring a thrilling collection of art, films, mixers and even comedy, beginning today.
Over 40 venues will participate in the five-day interactive experience. This year's project provides a showcase for artists, random patrons and art lovers while shining a spotlight on reality. Striving to defuse stereotypes about what L.A. is, and provide a vision of what it can be, global arts organization Freewaves is behind the mega venture.
Anne Bray, director of Freewaves, says, "Sometimes people outside of L.A. don't understand the difference between the neighborhood and the industry; so I wanted to use that confusion to create speculation on what the industry and the neighborhood could become."
The first night of the festival has all one could ask for - free food and drinks. From 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. the Roosevelt Hotel is hosting a Tropicana Pool Party. Artists' shorts will be played on screens set-up poolside. A $25 Freewaves membership fee will be available at the door for interested attendees. The Knitting Factory will also be throwing a launch party from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m. on Oct. 9.
Hollywould showcases 160 experimental videos, films, and media art from around the world. Two thousand entry video submissions later, a panel narrowed down the creativity, selecting the top works for your viewing pleasure. LCD screens inside stores and installed in storefront windows will broadcast live events in addition to site-specific happenings, most of which are free unless otherwise noted.
According to Bray, Friday is the "Visual Music" day featuring live events, Berlin visualists and DJs.
Saturday is the Pre-Election Improv Satire event at The Second City. Tickets are only $10 p.m. with 8 p.m., 9:30 and 11 p.m. show times. It's also "Streetwise Mobile Media" day when bike performances (ballets, bell ensembles, video feeds, live rides, art inventions and eco information will be provided. LACE and the gallery and theater next door will have screenings between activism and performances.
Sunday's “De/Tours” features five different "idiosyncratic tours" and perspectives of Hollywood Blvd. and will run from 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. Smartphones with GPS will document the tours preceding a tour discussion at Pig'n Whistle. Norman Klein will discuss how the street has been portrayed in films versus what's real. And at the American Cinematheque, films and videos will be screened, examining the differences between Hollywood as a location and as a culture. Reservations are available.
Monday is "Remapping Hollywood" day. Community groups will combine storytelling with personal media into self-portraits both individually and in groups, hosted at Lucky Strike Lanes.
